On a small turf there is nowhere to hide. Every player attacks and every player defends, so the shape you pick matters far more than it does on a full-size pitch.
The 2-1-1: solid and simple
Two defenders, one midfielder and one striker. This is the safest choice for new teams because it keeps two players back at all times.
The 1-2-1: the diamond
One defender, two wide midfielders and a striker. The diamond gives you width and quick passing triangles. It needs a disciplined defender who can read the game.
The 2-2: box shape
Two at the back, two up front. Great for teams with pace who like to counter-attack and swap positions freely.
- Keep passes short and on the ground.
- Rotate positions every few minutes to stay fresh.
- Use the walls only if the venue rules allow it.
